on the news last night

The anchor’s voice went flat and professional—the way they talk when they don’t want to scare viewers.

Twelve-year-old this time.

They showed his school picture: front teeth still growing in, eyes squinting against the flash.

Witnesses placed him at Al Manzil, mesmerized by some rich man’s yellow Lambo.

Then vanished.

In this city, the things that devour you always shine the brightest.

It made me think about how we’re all like that kid sometimes.

We get hypnotized by shiny things. Fancy cars. Designer clothes. Big houses we can’t afford.

Meanwhile the stuff that actually matters gets ignored. Our health. Our relationships. Our bank account.

I used to be obsessed with looking successful.

I’d lease cars I couldn’t afford. Buy expensive clothes on credit cards. Act like I was making way more money than I actually was.

All that shiny stuff almost destroyed my finances.

The irony? I can’t help but want more.
